winter

Hey, pause for a while ...

Behold!
Not far, the winter treads
the leaves are shed like a carpet laid
Soon the earth, the sky will be just white and gray
... she rules
as far as you can see

The denizens reach out skywards
to catch the warmth
of the ever elusive sun
to nourish their frozen saps

As the sun shines past the clouds
they say ... let us thaw a little ...
and they reach out
to savour
the rare pleasures of touch
... the touch of warmth

What a Peace of Luck!

The winner of the nobel peace prize for the year 2009 is ...

Yes. We all know now. Barrack Obaamaa.
The joke of the year - Nobel Peace Prize 2009.

Nobel Peace Prize for a man heading a country which is fighting wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran! It makes the award itself insignificant and mocks the institution.
There are some questions. What is the criteria for the award? Is it possible that certain Noble Prizes are awarded for political reasons? What is the point of awarding the prize to Obama? What are his achievements?

Obama may have been a good choice for being nominated for the TIMES Man-of-the-Year Award in December 2009. But Nobel Peace Prize! There must be something to this error in judgement, or else how could it happen so many times over in the awarding of a prize relating to work for PEACE.

Al Gore - was it as a compensation to having lost the Presidential election? Otherwise what has Climate Change got to do with peace. Al Gore should have been given the BBC World Challenge Award 2007 not the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nelson Mandela - for having spent 27 years in prison? How was he instrumental in ending apartheid in SA, sitting in a prison? Yes he was peaceful all the 27 years. It was not the personal initiatives of Mr. Mandela and Mr. de Klerk that ended apartheid in SA. It were the circumstances that compelled them to. It was not an individual here who was responsible for founding democracy in SA. The democratic movement had that strength.

I am sure, there are many more examples.
And I am sure there is a better explanation to this announcement in the category of Peace.

skated !

It was after twenty odd years that I donned a skating shoe (in fact a pair of them).  It was, though, with a difference that now, I was on blades, on ice and surprisingly balanced. This was on the new year's eve on Nevsky Prospect.  For an hour I glided along with my princess. By the end my ankles ached a bit, but it was fun.

his palette or mine

the last of the auburn leaves
    fall quivering
       the canvass - void
the solemnity of white and black
              glows on the bare branches
a spill of rare sunshines - wraps
warmth rush the dried veins of life
                         singed by the coldest drifts
fated by the chisels of frost
a splash of green, a bloom flourishes
on the first day of spring

Weekend News

As I always say - a weekend should be well spent {with the sun in the eye & the wind in the hair}.  This weekend it was a walk along the Neva {discovering things one yet hadn't} and a visit to the oceanarium.  Nothing extraordinary about the latter - good for first-timers. It's a deja-vu if one has seen the acquaria in singapore, or in shanghai for that matter, which is similar to the one in singapore.  Perhaps they are all similar - the layout, the props and the fish.  For the children it is fun {and if the child's happy, pop's happy too!}

Treasure in a Backpack

from my little one's library came home a fantastical book.  The pages took me into an enchanted, magical world - a world of faeries, elves, goblins, trolls, griffins and the likes. The book was one of the Spiderwick Chronicles series - The Seeing Stone. It is like the Rowling's and Tolkien's or the Philip Pullman's trilogy - about the magical world.

Another book of the same genre that I read sometime back is, Samit Basu's Simoqin Prophecies. Basu's book was a nice read sprinkled with Indian touch here and there, along with a somewhat western influence too. We must find a way to make our own Vikram aur Vetaal and other mythological tales - as interesting.

After two decades ...

... by sheer chance, old mates from school meet over the internet. The zeal however subsides quickly.  Everyone busy with their own lives and work. Or ...?
However, here is the sheer magic of internet ... real time touch base.  How did the good old ancestors manage at all?

And other thoughts.

And then I bought the 7th book of JKRowling.  Yeah, maybe soo late, but I bought it now - completing the journey from Hongkong airport to the city of St. Petersburg. But am busy reading somethings else - lying all around me.  One day I have to collect all the leaves.
